We are a small choir who rehearse every Monday from 8–10pm during term-time at Stanton Harcourt School (OX29 5RJ), and we already have several members from the village of Appleton. The society was formed in 1992 and since then has sung a wide range of choral works from early and baroque music through to classical and contemporary. We typically perform two or three concert programmes a year in local venues, usually in WItney but also including churches in Lower Windrush parishes. We also sing at special events such as weddings.
Our Music Director, Terry McNamara, was appointed in 2007. His studies at the Royal College of Music, notably harpsichord with Millicent Silver, led him into the world of early music, for which he has a particular passion. For some ten years he was Director of Music at St James’s Church, Piccadilly, and directed his own chamber orchestra. In 1992 he moved to France where he was organist of Langres Cathedral and Musical Director of l’Ensemble Vocal Montéclair. In 2006, Oxfordshire replaced France but he returned for many years to Langres on a regular basis to conduct rehearsals and concerts.
We currently have about 50 members and, although we wish to remain a relatively small and intimate choir, we would welcome enquiries from new singers. We do not audition prospective members. However, you must be able to sing in tune and with accurate rhythm, and you will need some ability to read music and understand musical notation. The vast majority of our repertoire involves singing in parts alongside others, so some previous experience of choral singing is desirable. The ability to sight-read music unassisted is not a requirement. As long as you’re prepared to do your homework to learn your notes and entries, you’ll be welcome. Prospective members are welcome to come along to a rehearsal and sing with us before deciding whether or not to join.
The current subscription (2019-20) is £120 per annum. Termly and monthly payment options are available pro rata.
